Can my cat catch Feline Distemper from a dog with Parvo?
I was with my sister-in-law yesterday afternoon around 3:30 and helped her with her new puppy… the new puppy had just gotten out of the hospital from getting treatment for Parvo. I washed my hands after handling the dog (I tried to help her get it to eat… to no avail.) and I made sure I washed my hands when I got home around 6:00 as well, before handling my cat. But last night around 8:00 my cat started throwing up (he threw up 4 times in about 8 hours.) and he is sleeping a lot. He ate and drank this morning and hasn’t vomited though. Could I have missed a step in my precautions and contaminated my cat? I have 2 cats, and only the one is doing this. The other one is absolutely fine, he has no vomiting and he has been around the sick cat.
Firstly, canine parvovirus affects only dogs. There are some cases in which mutated strains can affect cats, but this is an extremely rare (and when I say extremely, I mean you’d have a better chance of winning the lottery) kind of occurrence. And anyway, canine parvovirus is transmissible via the infected dog’s feces, so unless you’ve been manhandling the pup’s poop…
Secondly, if you are the kind of responsible owner who gets your animals vaccinated regularly, your cat(s) will already be protected against the major feline diseases – which includes feline distemper, commonly known as feline panleukopenia.
What is more probable is that your cat ate something that didn’t agree with it. If the vomiting continues, or if he begins having diarrhea, you should bring him to the vet immediately.
